Waltham Forest’s Green Open Homes – be nosy with a purpose!

Waltham Forest’s Green Open Homes – be nosy with a purpose!

Sat 18 & Sun 19 June 2016

Green homes in Waltham Forest are once again opening their homes to the public, this June, sharing their practical and creative eco ideas on how to cutbills and improve homes. So come along and be nosy. You’re sure to be inspired.

Keeping warm, keeping bills down and reducing energy use are priorities for us all. Waltham Forest’s Green Open Homes is back again, for a third year running, this time showcasing 11 homes in GreenHomesGOH-logo-1-300x176the borough, that have put their eco dreams to the test – often with fantastic results- seewww.hornbeam.org.uk/greenhomes.

Coordinated by Waltham Forest’s long-established environmental centre, the Hornbeam www.hornbeam.org.uk, Waltham Forest Green Homes takes place over the weekend of June 18-19. As well as homes to view, there will be a number of Energy Saving advice sessions held throughout the borough, before and after the weekend.  Waltham Forest’s Green Open Homes is part of the Green Open Homes national network, http://www.greenopenhomes.net

“Waltham Forest’s Green Open Homes is always an amazing weekend,” said Sue Wheat, Coordinator of Waltham Forest Green Open Homes for the Hornbeam, who will be opening up her green home to the public “We have various different types of houses involved – some are owned, some are rented, some have high-tech solar panels, others have made their own, some are harvesting rainwater to flush their toilets – there will be something to interest everyone.”

Rebecca Tully and Luke Sudbury have made their own solar shower out of a radiator in their terraced, Warner 1930s home. They also have a composting loo. Clare and Dan Kelly had a rainwater harvesting system installed in their Victorian terraced home, which collects rainwater in a tank under their garden and feeds two toilets and a washing machine.

Nicola and Oli Shelton have made recycling and upcycling their mission, with a seaside-themed back garden made over by Monty Don’s TV show ‘Big Dreams, Small Spaces’, while Charlie Avril’s beautiful vintage house is entirely furnished with items from the highly successful ‘Walthamstow Sell or Swap’ Facebook group, charity shops or salvaged items.

This year’s new homes include a group of people in housing need who were so inspired by their visit in last year’s Green Open Homes to the Headway self-build group who part-built their own modern, eco homes in Chapel Endhttp://walthamforestecho.co.uk/making-headway-in-housing/, the group are starting a self-build housing project of their own.

One of the most impressive homes taking part this year is Dee and Dwight’s Georgian house in Leytonstone. They will have a pre-Green Open Home drop-in on 3 June from 11am-12pm as well being open for Green Open Homes Weekend on Sat 18 June, 11am-12-m and 2-3pm. Address: Carlton House, Aylmer Road, Leytonstone, E11 3AD E: dw@itdoesthejob.com  www.itdoesthejob.com
